What Is the Gift of Speaking in Tongues?

Speaking in tongues—more accurately called praying in tongues—is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit through which a believer communicates with God spirit-to-Spirit, in a language they have not learned, whether it be the language of men or of angels. It is not a human technique to be mastered but a Spirit-enabled activity that flows out of the Holy Spirit's presence living within us.

A Person, Not a Formula

It's important to understand from the outset that genuine tongues cannot be learned by listening to or mimicking others in church. This isn't a skill picked up through repetition—it finds its origin in the Person of the Holy Spirit living within the believer. The very first record of this gift accompanied the Holy Spirit's arrival to indwell believers on the Day of Pentecost. Acts 2:4 tells us, "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

Notice the order there. First, the Holy Spirit—who had already been with them—came to dwell in them in a new way. Only after He filled them did they begin to speak in tongues. The speaking was the overflow, not the cause, of His indwelling presence.

Languages of Communication with God

Paul teaches us in 1 Corinthians 14:2, "For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit." This tells us something wonderful—tongues bypass the limitations of our human mind and allow our spirit to commune directly with God. Paul echoes this in 1 Corinthians 14:14, saying "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful."

Tongues can be languages of men or, as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:1, even "the tongues... of angels." Whatever the form, the purpose remains the same: intimate, Spirit-empowered communication with our Father that goes beyond what our finite minds could construct on their own.

A Gift for Today

This gift isn't a relic of the early church—it's part of the promised inheritance for every believer. Jesus Himself, in John 7:37-39, spoke of rivers of living water flowing from within those who believe in Him, referring to the Spirit that believers would later receive. This was prophesied all the way back through Moses and the prophets, and fulfilled gloriously at Pentecost.

When a believer is baptized in the Holy Spirit, the Spirit begins renewing the mind, and He often starts right there with our ability to communicate—giving us a new prayer language that edifies our spirit (1 Corinthians 14:4) and connects us to the Father in ways words alone cannot capture.

A Gift of Love, Not Pride

I want to be careful here—tongues were never meant to be a badge of spiritual superiority. Paul makes that abundantly clear in 1 Corinthians 13, sandwiching his teaching on spiritual gifts between two chapters on the necessity of love. Without love, even speaking "in the tongues of men and of angels" amounts to nothing but noise (1 Corinthians 13:1).

So if you desire this gift, desire it because you long for deeper communion with your Heavenly Father—not to appear spiritual, not to compete with others, but simply because you want more of Him. Ask for it in faith (Luke 11:13), receive it as a gift already promised, and let it be one more way the Holy Spirit works in and through you for His glory and for the building up of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 14:4-5).
